SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the European Union (EU) has let a limit for hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in substances, mixtures and articles.
Under Part A to Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on persistent organic pollutants (POP Recast Regulation), HCB now has an unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) limit value of 10 mg/kg.
HCB is considered by the European Commission to be an impurity in some substances, mixtures and articles. These include chlorinated solvents, coatings, inks, paints and toners, pesticides, plastics and textile and wood applications.
The EU originally signalled its intention to regulate HCB in November 2021. Regulation (EU) 2022/2291 was issued on November 23, 2022, to amend the POP Recast Regulation. In addition to setting the UTC limit, it also clarified legal aspects and facilitated enforcement.
The new law will come into effect on December 13, 2022.
