SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising businesses operating in India that the government intends to mandate the use of national standards for several categories of food contact product.
The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has produced a draft order signalling their intention to mandate five standards for five categories of food contact product.
Goods will be required to conform to specified Indian standards and bear the Standard Mark, under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), in accordance with Scheme-I of Schedule II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.
The five standards and product categories are:
– IS 14756:2022 ‘Stainless steel cookware’
– IS 1660:2009 ‘Wrought aluminum utensils’
– IS 13983:1994 ‘Stainless steel sinks for domestic purposes’
– IS 9396 (Part 1):1987 ‘Round open top sanitary cans for foods and drinks – tinplate’
– IS 14407:1996 ‘Aluminum cans for beverages’
The draft order was circulated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) on May 5, 2023. The proposed effective date is six months after being published in the Official Gazette. The date for micro and small businesses is twelve months after the date of publication.
