SGS Summarizes U.S. CPSC Amendments to the Final Rule for 16 CFR 1610 – Flammability of Clothing Textiles

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 017.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of an amendment to the Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles outlined in 16 CFR part 1610.

The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) finalized the proposed amendments in October 2023. The update made revisions for clarity, expanded permissible equipment and materials for testing, and updated equipment requirements to replace those that were outdated.

These modifications primarily address three areas:
– Burn code classification
– Stop thread specifications
– Refurbishing requirements

The amendment does not affect testing or criteria, and the standard for assessing fabric flammability and its suitability for use remains unchanged.

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 017.24 summarizes the revisions made by the CPSC, including more details on the modifications made to enhance the precision of testing and classification.

Stakeholders should review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 017.24 for more details.

The updated standard will come into effect on April 22, 2024.
