SGS Summarizes EU Consultation on BPA and other Bisphenols in Certain Food Contact Materials and Articles

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published details of a European Union (EU) draft regulation on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives in certain food contact materials (FCM) and articles.

Announced by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in June 2024, and intended for adoption in November 2024, the draft regulation will amend Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on food contact plastics. It will also repeal Regulation (EU) 2018/213 in relation to BPA in varnishes and coatings intended to come into contact with food.

Planned for adoption in November 2024, the draft regulation will come into effect 20 days after it is published in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU).

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 107.24 covers the EU’s draft regulation on the use of BPA and other bisphenols in certain food contact materials and articles. It includes a table summarizing the articles within the regulation, and second table covering substances, scope, specific applications and other restrictions.

Stakeholders are advised to refer to the original SafeGuardS 107.24 for full details.
