Lead Restriction in All Consumer Products Proposed by New York State

Geneva (March 28, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 045.25, focusing on New York State’s proposed law to regulate lead in consumer goods, unless properly labeled.

Lead is responsible for severe health issues, including brain damage, developmental delays and organ failure, particularly in young children.

AB 6500, the proposed Lead-Containing Products Act, was introduced on March 5, 2025. If passed, it will add Title 12 to Article 37 of New York State’s Environmental Conservation Law, strengthening federal protections already in place for children’s products, furniture and raw paint by regulating lead content in all consumer products within the state.

The bill allows legal action against any person or entity (except retailers) within the supply chain of non-compliant products. If approved, the law will take effect 180 days after enactment.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to inform stakeholders about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 045.25 includes the definition of a consumer product under AB 6500 and further requirements of the proposed law.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 045.25 for more details.
