BIFMA Launches 2024 LEVEL® e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard

Geneva (July 14, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 092.25 to highlight the publication of the 2024 edition of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard. Released on April 21, 2025, by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA) and approved by ANSI, this update begins a 12-month transition period for certification to the new standard.

The LEVEL® e3 standard provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating the environmental, health and wellness, and social impacts of furniture products. It remains one of the leading sustainability benchmarks in the global furniture industry.

Transition Guidelines:

  • New applicants: Organizations may certify to either the 2019 or 2024 edition until April 21, 2026. After this date, only the 2024 version will be accepted for new certifications
  • Existing certificate holders:
    • Recertification due on or before April 21, 2026, may use either version
    • Recertification after that date must comply with the 2024 edition

In all cases, the complete audit and approval process must be finalized before the deadline. Credits or criteria cannot be mixed between versions.

Key Updates in the 2024 edition Include:

  • Introduction of a fourth certification LEVEL (up from three)
  • A shift from a point-accumulation model to fixed requirements per certification level

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed of significant regulatory and industry developments. SafeGuardS 092.25 provides further guidance on the 2024 LEVEL® e3 standard and transition requirements.

Stakeholders are encouraged to review SafeGuardS 092.25 for full details on the updated certification requirements.
