PFAS are recognized as harmful ‘forever chemicals’. A recent US study has found evidence of PFAS in a variety food packaging products, leading to calls for a nationwide ban. In the US, several states and cities do currently regulate PFAS, but the level of restriction is dependent on the jurisdiction. In the EU, restrictions are governed by a variety of regulations, including REACH.
SGS’s Consumer Compact article looks at the issue of PFAS, details the restrictions that are currently being enforced in the US and Europe and considers what manufacturers can do to find alternatives.
