Guidelines for Natural and Synthetic Rubber Commodities Published in Germany

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification
company, has published a summary of three recommendations issued by the German
Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, BfR) in mid-2021. The three
recommendations are interrelated and cover natural and synthetic rubber
commodities, including those that are intended to come into contact with food.

The three recommendations are:

  • Recommendation XXI ‘Commodities based on natural and synthetic
    rubber’
  • Recommendation XXI/1 ‘Commodities
based on natural and synthetic rubber in contact with food’
  • Recommendation XXI/2 ‘Special consumer goods made of natural and
synthetic rubber and lattices made of natural and synthetic rubber (formerly
    special category)’

These three recommendations supersede the 2011 iteration of Recommendation
XXI ‘Commodities based on natural and synthetic rubber’. Stakeholders should
also be aware that a separate Recommendation XXI/3 ‘Consumer goods made of
cross-linked thermoplastic elastomer’ is planned for food contact thermoplastic
elastomers (TPEs).

These recommendations should be considered effective immediately.

SGS has published a summary of these three recommendations to help
suppliers of natural and synthetic rubber commodities understand their
requirements. To read these summaries, view SGS’s original SafeGuard
