US Updates Safety Standard for Children’s Folding Chairs and Stools

US updates its safety standard for children’s
folding chairs and stools.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has
published a direct rule revising its safety standard for children’s folding
chairs and stools. Direct final rule 16 CFR 1232 amends the standard by
incorporating the latest version of ASTM F2613-19 – Standard Consumer Safety
Specification for Children’s Chairs and Stools. The adoption has been done
without modification.

Folding chairs and stools are defined within the
standard as:

“Children’s chair or stool which can be folded for
transport or storage.”

Stakeholders should be aware the primary change brought
in by ASTM F2613-19 is the requirement that, to provide protection for fingers,
hands and toes, all products without latching and locking mechanisms must have
a hinge gap greater than or equal to ½ inch.

The direct final rule was published on April 1,
2020, and it will come into effect on July 6, 2020.
