ASTM Updates Safety Standard for Beach Umbrellas and Anchor Devices

Geneva (July 29, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has released SafeGuardS 102.25 to inform stakeholders of the latest revision to ASTM’s standard consumer safety specification for beach umbrellas and anchor devices.

Designated as ASTM F3681-25, the updated standard was developed by ASTM International’s F15.79 Market Umbrellas subcommittee and formally approved on June 1, 2025. It establishes performance requirements intended to help prevent beach umbrellas and anchor systems from becoming airborne due to wind, thereby addressing safety hazards such as lacerations and impalement injuries identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The standard applies to any entity providing the use of beach umbrellas and defines covered products as:
– Beach umbrella: A removable device installed in or on the sand on a beach, consisting of a canopy supported by a single shaft/pole, used as protection against sun, rain or other weather conditions
– Anchor device: A device that is attached to or integrated into the umbrella pole and is secured in or on the sand on a beach, which enables the umbrella to perform in an open upright or angled position and prevents it from becoming airborne

Key updates in ASTM F3681-25 include:
– A new definition for ‘integrated’
– Revised mechanical pull test methods for umbrella/anchor systems
– Introduction of wind tunnel testing with updated acceptance criteria
– New labeling requirements for beach umbrellas
– Updated warning statements and mandatory compliance label text

In support of the revised standard, the CPSC has issued consumer guidance encouraging the public to purchase beach umbrellas that are clearly labeled as meeting ASTM F3681.

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed of important changes to product safety standards and regulations. SafeGuardS 102.25 provides a detailed summary of the ASTM revisions and their implications for manufacturers, retailers and beach equipment providers.

Stakeholders are encouraged to review SafeGuardS 102.25 and obtain a copy of the updated standard from the ASTM website to ensure full compliance with current safety expectations.
