Geneva (July 25, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 099.25 to highlight regulatory updates under Australia’s Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS).
In June 2025, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) issued Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management (Register) Amendment (2025 Measures No. 1) Instrument 2025, adding six substances/groups of substances to the IChEMS Register.
Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and mercury and its compounds are now listed in Schedule 6. This means they are considered likely to cause serious or irreversible harm to the environment but may be permitted for essential uses under strict conditions. Prohibitions on the manufacture, import, export and use of DBDPE will take effect starting January 1, 2027, with limited exemptions for unintentional trace contaminants (UTCs), essential-use applications and legacy articles.
Additional scheduling includes:
– Aryl sulfonate hydrotropes in Schedule 2 (unlikely to cause harm)
– 1,2-dichloroethane in Schedule 4 (may cause harm)
– 1,2-dibromoethane and methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) in Schedule 5 (likely to cause harm)
Risk management measures for all other substances take effect on January 1, 2026.
SGS publishes SafeGuardS to help stakeholders stay informed on critical regulatory changes. SafeGuardS 099.25 provides further details on the scheduled chemicals and outlines the upcoming compliance obligations under IChEMS.
Stakeholders are advised to review SafeGuardS 099.25 to assess how these changes may impact their operations in the Australian market.
