DEHP Banned in Some Medical Devices in California

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 152.24 on California’s prohibition of Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in intravenous solution containers (IV bags) and IV tubing.

AB 2300 was signed into law on September 25, 2024, making California the first US jurisdiction to restrict ortho-phthalates in medical devices. DEHP is an ortho-phthalate that is commonly added to plastic materials, particularly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), as a plasticizer to increase material flexibility.

However, exposure to DEHP has now been linked to a variety of various adverse health effects, such as endocrine disruption, harm to the reproductive system and cancer.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 152.24 covers the new ban on DEHP in some medical devices and includes a breakdown of important terms and definitions and a table with highlights of AB 2300.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 152.24 to learn more about the provisions, their requirements and effective dates.
