Direct Final Rule for Play Yards Issued by US CPSC

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 023.25, reporting on the US Consumer Products Safety Commission’s (CPSC) publication of a direct final rule to adopt, with modifications, the latest version of ASTM F406, the safety standard for play yards.

The direct final rule, published on January 29, 2025, updates 16 CFR 1221 and incorporates ASTM F406-24 (Standard Consumer Specification for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs/Play Yards) with modifications. These changes exclude some sections applying specifically to non-full-size cribs.

Play yards, also known as playpens, are defined in the standard as a: “framed enclosure that includes a floor and has mesh or fabric-sided panels primarily intended to provide a play or sleeping environment for children; it may fold for storage or travel.”

Barring significant adverse comments to the CPSC by February 28, 2025, the rule will become effective on April 5, 2025.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 023.25 includes information on the changes to 16 CFR 1221, including updated definitions, revisions and non-substantive changes regarding marking, labeling and instructional literature. A link to a read-only copy of the standard is also provided.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 023.25 for more details.
