The
EU has announced a new harmonized standard to guide manufacturers through
assessing the technical documentation required for compliance with Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2).
The
European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) has recently
issued details of a new harmonized standard – EN IEC 63000:2018 – which will
replace the previous standard EN 50581:2012. The new standard sets out
specifications for the technical documentation required for assessing
materials, components, and electrical and electronic equipment, with respect to
the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances.
EN
IEC 63000:2018 is based on the existing international standard IEC 63000:2016, which itself is based on EN 50581:2012.
In many ways the existing and the new standards are almost identical, although
wording relating to the EU RoHS Directive has been removed. This was done
intentionally to address different international substance regulations while
allowing the same approach from manufacturers, wherever they operate in the world.
IEC 63000:2016 also updated normative references to reflect the latest
international developments in analytical test methods and material declaration.
The
European Commission, in implementing decision (EU) 2020/659 of May 15, 2020,
stipulates that harmonized standard EN 50581:2012 will be withdrawn from
November 18, 2021, to be replaced by EN IEC 63000:2018. Stakeholders need to
update the reference standard in their Declaration of Conformity to show
compliance with Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2).
