European Accessibility Act Comes into Force Across the EU

Geneva (September 26, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, draws attention to the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which has been in force since June 28, 2025. The legislation establishes unified accessibility requirements across EU member states for specific products and services, fostering inclusion and improving usability through accessible design.

The Directive applies to products placed on the EU market after June 28, 2025, including consumer computer hardware and operating systems, payment terminals, self-service terminals, consumer terminal equipment with interactive computing capabilities, e-readers, e-commerce platforms and services such as electronic communications, audiovisual media and banking.

To comply, manufacturers must implement internal production controls, maintain technical documentation, ensure production processes meet the requirements and affix the EU CE marking with a declaration of conformity. The standard EN 301 549 provides the testing framework for accessibility compliance across ICT products and services.

SGS provides guidance and testing to help stakeholders meet the EAA requirements, including accessibility assessments for smartphones, smartwatches, POS systems, telephones, televisions, routers, online malls, websites and other digital platforms. By leveraging SGS’s global network of experts and laboratories, companies can ensure their products and services are accessible, compliant and aligned with EU regulatory expectations.

SafeGuardS 139/25 offers a detailed overview of the EAA and outlines the steps organizations should take to ensure compliance. Stakeholders are advised to review the original SafeGuardS for more information.
