Magnet Safety Standard Proposed by US CPSC

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the US has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) for a magnet safety standard (16 CRF 1262).

Publication was approved by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on January 10, 2022. If accepted, the proposed rule will apply to a wide variety of consumer products that contain one or more loose or separable magnets and which are designed, marketed or intended for the purposes of:

  • Entertainment
  • Jewelry (including children’s jewelry)
  • Mental stimulation
  • Stress relief

Products that are already subject to toy safety standard will be exempt from this proposed rule because the standard already covers magnet ingestion hazard.

The aim of this rule is to reduce the risk of death and injury from ingestion of one or more high-powered magnets. It is especially aimed at children and teenagers. To achieve this, each loose or separable magnet must have a flux index of less than 50 kG² mm² if it fits into the small parts cylinder described in 16 CFR 1501.4. Flux index analysis must be done in accordance with 16 CFR 1262.4.

The CPSC will accept comments on the NPR until March 28, 2022.
