Mercosur Updates Requirements for Food Contact Cellulosic Materials and Articles

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) has amended its technical regulation on food contact cellulosic materials and articles.

Mercosur/GMC/Res. No. 26/22 was issued in November 2022. It revises GMC Resolution No. 40/15 ‘Mercosur Technical Regulation on Cellulosic Materials, Packaging and Equipment Intended to be in Contact with Food’ by establishing a gray scale of five for the migration of pigments and dyes from food contact paper and board.

Previously, under GMC Resolution No. 40/15, the only requirement was that pigments and dyes must not migrate according to testing to BS EN 646 ‘Paper and board intended to come into contact with foodstuffs – Determination of color fastness of dyed paper and board’.

Member states – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay – must transpose the revision into national law by May 16, 2023.
