SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS article to help stakeholders understand recently mandated changes to Thailand’s rules relating to microwavable food contact plastic materials and articles.
A Ministerial Regulation was issued by the Ministry of Industry in April 2022 mandating the following standards:
- TIS 2493 Part 1-2554 (2011) ‘Plastic food containers for microwave Part 1 for reheating’
- TIS 2493 Part 2-2556 (2013) ‘Plastic food containers for microwave Part 2 for single reheating’
The first standard specifies the requirements for polypropylene (PP), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(methyl pentene) (PMP). It covers marking, labeling, packaging and conformity’
The second standard provides the requirements for PP, PET and polystyrene (PS) and includes provisions relating to temperature resistance, marking, labeling, packaging and conformity.
SGS SafeGuardS 071/22 includes greater detail on the testing parameters and migration limits included in both standards to help stakeholders ensure their products remain in compliance with Thailand’s legislation.
Both standards will become mandatory on January 3, 2023.
