New National Tent Standard Covering Flammability and Labeling Published in Canada

Canada introduces new
national standard for tent flammability and labelling requirements.

Published in April 2020 by
the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020 – Flammability
and Labeling Requirements for Tents – aims to improve tent safety and minimize
fire hazards. It applies to both tents for outdoor use and those tents
that are intended for both indoor and outdoor use, such as:

  • Camping tents
  • Backpacking tents
  • Suspended tents
  • Teepees
  • Children’s tents
  • Tent trailers
  • Ice-fishing tents
  • Dining shelters
  • Sun shelters
  • Screen houses

It does not apply to:

  • Indoor tents
  • Tents that are not intended to shelter people
  • Tents used for commercial purposes only
  • Tents subject
to the National Building Code of Canada.

In addition to labeling
requirements, the new national standard covers performance requirements and
test methods for the assessment of tent material flammability. These should
cover the tent when it is brand new, and after leaching and after weathering.

Stakeholders should be
aware Health Canada is still advising manufacturers to conform to the current
requirements – Tent Regulation (SOR/2016-185). It is currently working on an
amendment proposal to incorporate the new standard’s requirements. In addition,
there will need to be an amendment to the Toy Regulation (SOR/2011-17) for play
tents. Until the changes to Tent Regulation and Toy Regulation are made,
compliance to CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020 is voluntary.
