New York Announces Intention to Prohibit Formamide in Foam Mat Products for Children

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the US state of New York intends to prohibit formamide in foam mat products for children aged three or younger.

The European Union already restricts formamide in:

– Foam materials for toys intended for children under 36 months
– Toys intended to be placed in the mouth

Foam mat products covered by the proposed act include mats, pads, mattresses and cushions used as or in a connection with bedding, changing platforms, strollers and carriages, highchairs, car seats, play pens and toys.

The state of New York introduced SO2983 ‘Formamide-free Children’s Product Act’ in January 2023. If accepted, it will prohibit formamide in children’s foam-mat products by adding a new title 4 to Article 37 of the state’s environmental conservation law and become effective on December 1, 2025.
