New Zealand Tightens Safety Rules for Lead in Paints and Graphic Materials

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has summarized the New Zealand Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement that will result in tighter safety standards for paints and graphic materials.

Consultation on the proposed changes to group standards for aerosols, corrosion inhibitors and surface coatings and colorants, plus one graphic materials standard, began in October 2023. Subsequently, the Group Standards (Reducing Lead) Amendment Notice 2024 was announced on August 22, 2024. This contains specifications for the maximum levels of lead in paints and strengthens rules for graphic materials such as crayons, finger paints and felt tip pens. It will be implemented in phases from September 19, 2024.

Several important changes have been made in Schedule 1, Parts 1 to 5, to the following:
– 16 surface coatings and colorants group standards
– 8 other surface coatings and colorants group standards
– 6 aerosol group standards
– 6 corrosion inhibitors group standards
– Graphic materials group standard 2020

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 137.24 provides much more detail of the amendment notice, including effective dates.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 137.24 for more details.
