Several Chemicals Added to the Australian IChEMS Register

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 179.24 to provide businesses operating in Australia with an update on regulated chemicals in consumer products.

On December 2, 2024, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) issued an amendment to Australia’s Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management (Register) Instrument 2022 (IChEMS Register). The amendment adds the following chemicals to Schedule 7 of the IChEMS Register:
– Hexachlorobenzene (HCB)
– Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
– Polychlorinated terphenyls (PCTs)

Chemicals in this category are deemed likely to cause serious or irreversible harm to the environment and with no essential uses.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 179.24 contains an overview of the changes, as well as a table highlighting provisions for the three chemicals. Amendments come into effect on July 1, 2025, and will impact import, manufacture, use and export.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 179.24 for more details.
