SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that Malaysia has published a guidance to assist them with the nation’s voluntary certification of food contact products.
Released by the Ministry of Health of Malaysia (KKM) in June 2022, the guideline covers application procedures relating to voluntary Food Grade Certification for food contact materials and articles. It includes procedural and specification requirements for all food grade products used in the preparation, processing, packaging, storage, delivery or exposure to food.
Products found to conform to the standard can display the Food Grade Certification logo for a validity period of three years.
SGS has published a comprehensive overview of the guideline, including its primary provisions, as well as an example of the Food Grade Certification logo and details of the testing requirements for items such as:
- Gloves made from any of seven materials (natural rubber latex, synthetic rubber (synthetic latex), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), neoprene and nitriles) – ISO 14285:2014(E) ‘Rubber and plastic gloves for food services – Limits for extractable substances’
- Thermal bags – Regulation (EU) 10/2011 ‘Food Contact Plastics’ and Regulation (EU) 1907/2006 ‘Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)’. NB: inner layers must not be manufactured from vinyl, PVC or other materials that may harm the content
- Food contact plastics – compliance with migration limits for seven metals and specified substances
- Colorant and diluent permissions
To review this comprehensive overview, including greater detail on the requirements for gloves and food contact plastics, stakeholders are advised to see SGS’s original SafeGuardS 097.22.
