SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published an overview of recent US state bills to regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products.
PFAS includes perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). They are a diverse family of synthetic chemicals that are chemically inert and resistant to high temperatures. They are used in a wide variety of consumer goods because of their ability to repel water, grease, oil and/or dirt. However, in recent years, they are increasingly being regulated because of their toxic effects and negative impact on the environment.
Several US jurisdictions have introduced restrictions on PFAS. For manufacturers and suppliers of consumer products such as cookware, food packaging, napkins, upholstery, waterproof clothing, carpets, anti-fog sprays, textiles and juvenile products, this can be confusing as there is no single restriction/prohibition/disclosure requirement that is employed in all jurisdictions.
SGS has now published an overview of several state bills that were published at the beginning of 2022. Stakeholders are advised to review SafeGuard 032/22 to learn more.
Stakeholders are reminded that the language in a bill may change as it proceeds through the legislature.
