SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a summary of the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) new compliance guide, which is part of efforts to tackle greenwashing in the fashion industry.
Published on September 18, 2024, the guide continues the CMA’s efforts to counter misleading or exaggerated sustainability claims. It provides recommendations and examples to help businesses navigate consumer protection laws related to environmental claims.
Aimed at fostering a level playing field of fair practices in the fashion sector, the guide offers actionable advice for compliance with the Green Claims Code and is relevant to clothing, footwear, fashion accessories and related services, including packaging, delivery and returns.
With UK consumer protection shortly to be strengthened under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, the CMA will have the power to fine businesses up to 10% of their worldwide sales if the new law is broken. The Act comes into effect in April 2025.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 149.24 provides further information about the UK’s new compliance guide.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 149.24 for more details.
