SGS Looks at CPSC Consultation Over Proposed Rule for Electric Bicycles

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 051.24 to keep stakeholders informed about a consultation being held by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) over a proposal to enhance safety in electric bicycles (e-bikes).

It is estimated that in the US between 2017 and 2022, 53,100 people were injured in relation to e-bikes. The CPSC is seeking to address this problem through regulatory measures.

In the US, bicycles are regulated under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA). The CPSC is now extending this regulation to include low-speed e-bikes with electric motors that can be partially or fully powered by electricity. As part of the process, the CPSC has prepared 52 questions for public consultation. This public consultation will end on May 14, 2024.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 051.24 provides an overview of the proposal and the consultation process.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 051.24 for more information.
