SGS Publishes Summary of Thailand’s Proposal to Mandate Standard for Cooking Paper

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS covering Thailand’s proposal to introduce a mandatory standard for cooking paper.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) circulated Thailand’s intention to mandate TIS 3438-2565 (2022) for cooking paper in July 2023. This standard was originally published by the Ministry of Industry in 2022.

The standard defines the safety requirements for food contact paper, cardboard and paper containers made from virgin pulp or virgin pulp mixed with non-coloring synthetic fibers for filtering hot liquids, heating or cooking food at temperatures not exceeding 220 °C.

It specifies:
– Type
– Dimension and capacity
– Materials
– Migration of substances
– Specifications
– Packing
– Marking and labeling
– Sampling
– Hygiene requirements
– Test methods

SGS has published SafeGuardS 103.23 to help stakeholders understand the requirements for cooking paper in TIS 3438-2565 (2022). It includes a table summarizing substance requirements and details of the proposed effective date.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 103.23 for more details.
