SGS SafeGuardS Covering New Algerian Law for Food Contact Metals and Alloys

SGS, the world’s leading testing inspection and certification company, is reminding stakeholders that Algeria’s Department of Commerce and Export Promotion has issued an interministerial decree that prescribes specific measures for general and specific types of food contact metals and alloys.

Interministerial Decree of December 18, 2022, was issued on April 12, 2023. Its scope covers metals and alloys intended to come into contact with food, both packaging and non-packaging.

These include:

– Coated and uncoated steels and stainless steels
– Aluminum and aluminum alloys
– Non-alloy cast iron
– Tin and tin alloys
– Zinc and zinc alloys
– Articles made of different types of coated metals

There are various exemptions, including:

– Enameled metals and alloys
– Metals and alloys with an inorganic coating
– Drinking water pipes
– Food contact toys made of metals and alloys

SGS had published SafeGuardS 052.23 to help stakeholders understand the new law. It includes three tables:

– Provisions in the interministerial decree
– Specific migration limits (SML) for metals and alloy components (Annex I Table 1)
– SML for metals as contaminants and impurities (Annex I Table 2)

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 052.23 to learn more about Algeria’s new law for food contact metals and alloys, which is considered to be effective immediately.
