SGS Summarizes Changes to Canadian Rules for Electric Heaters

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 178.24 to provide stakeholders with a summary of recent changes to portable electric heater requirements in Canada.

Health Canada has determined that portable electric heaters must meet the key performance criteria outlined in the danger to human health or safety assessment process before being manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada. Announced on November 28, 2024, this means portable electric heaters are now added to Table 3 of the General Prohibitions process.

Stakeholders should be aware this does not constitute a ban on all portable electric heaters, as only those that do not meet critical safety criteria are considered dangerous and cannot be manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada.

Compliance can be demonstrated by successful assessment against the following standards:
– CSA C22.2 NO. 46-13 (R2022) – Standard for electric air-heaters
– CAN/CSA E60335-2-30:13 (R2022) – Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2-30: Particular requirements for room heaters

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 178.24 for more information about Canada’s addition of portable electric heaters to Table 3 of the General Prohibitions process.

As an accredited certification body by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and a recognized NRTL by OSHA in the US, SGS is perfectly placed to support businesses manufacturing, importing or retailing portable electric heaters in Canada.
