SGS Summarizes EPA Regulation of NMP under TSCA

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS summarizing the EPA’s proposal to regulate N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) under the US Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

NMP is a solvent used across a broad range of industrial, commercial and consumer applications, including the production of polymers, coatings and paint removers, lubricants, degreasers, cleaning and furniture care products, and electrical devices. Concerns are now being raised over its risk to fertility, the liver, kidneys and immune and nervous systems.

The proposed rule, 89 FR 51134, would regulate NMP in most applications by amending 40 CFR 751 ‘Regulation of certain chemical substances and mixtures’, under section 6 of TSCA.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that can impact their ability to trade. SafeGuardS 096.24 contains details of the proposal, including information on the proposed de minimis level of 0.1%. It also includes a table that summarizes the proposed measures and information on record-keeping requirements.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 096.24 for more details.
