SGS Summarizes EU Listing of Two POP Chemicals

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 102.24 to inform stakeholders of the European Union’s plan to list dechlorane plus and methoxychlor under Part A, Annex I of the EU’s persistent organic pollutants (POP) Regulation 2019/1021.

An unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) value has been applied to these two POP chemicals when they are in substances, mixtures and articles, to reinforce the application and enforcement of Article 3(1)(b) of the regulation.

Dechlorane plus is included as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) in the EU’s Registration, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation and is used mainly as a flame retardant. Methoxychlor is an organochlorine pesticide sometimes used as a replacement for dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT).

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 102.24 includes a summary of the draft regulations, including time-limited derogations, and provides interested parties with the necessary information to prepare for changes in the law.
