SGS Summarizes European Commission Latest Current Thinking on Microplastics in Products

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 037.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of the latest current thinking issued on microplastics in products by the European Commission.

Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 was issued in September 2023 to restrict synthetic polymer microparticles (‘microplastics’) as substances on their own or when intentionally added to mixtures. It is being implemented in phases from October 17, 2023.

Since publication, the Commission has clarified its thinking on a variety of points associated with the application of the microplastics restrictions. A number of these documents relate to the use of glitter on its own and in products.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to inform stakeholders about regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 037.24 covers the latest pronouncement from the European Commission on the application of the microplastics restriction. It includes an exhaustive summary of the current thinking relating to glitter.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 037.24 for more information.

It should be noted, the European Commission is expected to issue a detailed Q&A document in due course to assist stakeholders with the implementation of the regulation.
