SGS Summarizes German Alignment of Formaldehyde Emission Requirements with the EU

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published an overview of Germany’s repeal of its national law on formaldehyde emissions from wood-based panels and other products.

In February 2024, Germany amended its Chemical Prohibition Ordinance (ChemVerbotsV) and repealed the requirements for formaldehyde emissions from:
– Wood-based panels
– Furniture containing wood-based panels
– Other products falling under Entry 1 of Appendix 1 to Section 3 of this piece of national legislation

This follows the issuing of Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 to regulate formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing substances in articles by the European Union (EU) in July 2023. Regulation (EU) 2023/1464 must be adopted by all member states, with implementation in phases, starting August 7, 2026. The repeal therefore aligns Germany’s requirements with the rest of the EU.

Entry 1 of Appendix 1 to Section 3 of the Chemicals Prohibition Ordinance will be repealed on August 7, 2026 – the same day the EU law on formaldehyde emissions becomes applicable.
