SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 081.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of Japanese proposals to ban products containing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) isomers and PFOA-related compounds.
Following the decision to list these substances as Class I Specified Chemical Substances in February 2024, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) and other competent authorities announced a draft cabinet order in April 2024. If accepted, this will revise the nation’s Enforcement Order of the Act on the Examination and Regulation of Manufacturing of Chemical Substances (Cabinet Order No. 202, 1974). The cabinet order is planned for publication in July 2024 and its provisions are expected to come into force in January 2025.
The manufacture, import and use of Class I Specified Chemical Substances, and products containing them, is prohibited unless authorized or permitted.
