SGS Summarizes New CEN Standard for Pushchairs Intended for Leisure Sport Activities

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has provided a summary of EN1888-3:2024, the new standard from the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) which addresses the potential hazards of using pushchairs during sporting activities.

The original EN1888 series has been split to include the use of pushchairs in this specific context. As the third part, EN1888-3:2024 only applies in conjunction with EN1888-1+A1:2022 (and EN1888-2+A1:2022, if the product is suitable for children up to 22 kg) and adds relevant requirements.

Products coming under the scope of the new standard include wheeled child conveyances used whilst running/jogging or skating. However, ice skating is explicitly ruled out due to the number of hazards involved. Other exclusions are also detailed.

First made available by CEN in July 2024, the new standard must be published in the catalogs of European national bodies within six months and any conflicting national standards must be withdrawn by January 2025 at the latest.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 127.24 includes a breakdown of the main concerns addressed by the new standard.
