SGS Summarizes UK Revisions to Legislation on POP Chemicals for Great Britain

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a summary of revisions to legislation covering persistent organic pollutants (POP) in Great Britain (Scotland, Wales and England).

Following Brexit, the UK government retained Regulation (EU) 2019/1021, as amended by the Persistent Organic Pollutants (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 and the Persistent Organic Pollutants (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2022 (UK Statutory Instruments (S.I.) 2020/1358 and 2022/1293).

In 2023, they issued two pieces of legislation to revise their rules:
– The Persistent Organic Pollutants (Amendment) Regulations 2023 (UK S.I. 2023/729)
– The Persistent Organic Pollutants (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2023 (UK S.I. 2023/1217)

The former permits until December 3, 2025, the manufacture, placing onto the market and use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds in textiles for oil- and water-repellence for the protection of workers from dangerous liquids. The latter adds perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds and their unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) values.

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to help stakeholders stay informed about regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 159.23 provides an effect summary of the UK revisions and includes a table with highlights of UK S.I. 2023/1217.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 159.23 for more information.
