SGS Summarizes US Ban on Crib Bumpers

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to help stakeholders understand a final rule issued by the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) banning crib bumpers.

A crib bumper is defined as any material that is intended to cover the sides of a crib to prevent injury to the crib’s occupant from impact against the side of a crib or to prevent partial or complete access to any openings in the sides of a crib in order to prevent body parts becoming entrapped.

The rule relates to:
– Padded crib bumpers
– Supported and unsupported vinyl bumper guards
– Vertical crib slat covers

It does not cover non-padded mesh crib liners.

Final rule 16 CFR 1309 reflects a statutory ban that came into effect on November 12, 2022, which follows the signing into law of the Safe Sleep for babies Act of 2021 by President Biden on May 16, 2022.

16 CFR 1309 was published on August 14, 2023.
