SGS Summarizes Washington Designation of 6PPD-containing Tires a Priority Product under Safer Products Program

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 083.24 to keep stakeholders informed about the US state of Washington’s bill to designate tires containing N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) as priority products under its safer products program.

Signed into law in May 2019, the Safer Products for Washington program (RCW 70A.350) was designed to reduce toxic chemicals in consumer products. It is structured in cycles, with each cycle having four phases:
– Prioritizing chemical classes
– Prioritizing consumer products
– Determining potential regulatory actions
– Rulemaking

In March 2024, law SB 5931 was signed into law. This identified 6PPD as a priority chemical and certain vehicle tires containing 6PPD as priority consumer products. 6PPD is a stabilizer and anti-degradant that boosts a tire’s durability. However, it has been linked to salmon die-offs.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that can impact their business. SafeGuardS 083.24 provides a helpful overview of the state of Washington’s designation of 6PPD-containing tires as priority products. In addition to a summary of the Safer Products program process, it also provides a schedule for the adoption of cycle 2.

Stakeholders should review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 083.24 for more details.
