SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the United Kingdom (UK) has amended its list of toy safety standards for presumption of conformity with legislation enforced in Great Britain (GB – England, Wales and Scotland).
A notice of proposal was issued by the Department for Business, Energy & Industry Strategy (BEIS) on August 3, 2022. This revises six toy safety standards:
- EN 71-2:2020 ‘Flammability’
- EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 ‘Migration of certain elements’
- EN 71-4:2020 ‘Experimental sets for chemistry and related activities’
- EN 71-7:2014+A3:2020 ‘Finger paints’
- EN 71-12:2016 ‘N-Nitrosamines and N-nitrosatable substances’
- EN 71-13:2021 ‘Olfactory board games, cosmetic kits and gustative games’
The references to standards are published and designated accordingly under Regulation 2A of SI 2011/1881.
SGS has published SafeGuardS 096.22 to look at the changes. This article includes a table that compares the new and old standards and provides insights that are a useful resource for manufacturers and importers looking to ensure compliance with GB regulations.
Stakeholders should be aware that since Brexit, different rules are enforced in Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK.
The changes came effect on September 1, 2022.
