SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is reminding stakeholders that China has published a new industry standard covering textile products for newborns – FZ/T 08002-2022.
Issued by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as part of the No. 10 announcement in 2022, the new standard came into effect on October 1, 2022. It covers a wide range of textile products for newborns, including clothing, socks, hats, belly band, gloves, towels, towels (quilt), sleeping bags and bedding. Within the context of the standard, a newborn is defined as a baby from birth to 28 days.
Technical requirements within the standard cover:
Shell and filling materials:
1. Soft and light-colored pure cotton fabrics should be used in textile products with direct contact to skin for newborns
2. Fuzzed fabrics should not be used as clothes for newborns
3. Coated fabrics, fabrics printed and dyed with pigments, and fabrics treated with functional finishing agents (e.g., antibacterial and flame-retardant) must not be used as textile products for newborns
4. Down filling materials must not be used in textile products for newborn babies and all wadding filling materials must comply with the requirements of GB 31701 category A and GB 18383
Internal quality – must comply with the rules in Table 1 of FZ/T 08002-2022. Tests cover fiber content, formaldehyde content, pH value, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amines, odor, heavy metal contents(Pb, Cd), phthalates, burning behavior, cords and drawstrings, sharp points and sharp edges for attached components, removal force for attached components, fiber shedding, absorption, shell and lining colorfastness (colorfastness to water, perspiration, washing, saliva, rubbing, urine, breast milk), extractable heavy metal content, seam strength and tensile strength for clothes belts
Appearance quality – must comply with the rules in Table 2 of FZ/T 08002-2022
