SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at the European Union’s new legislation for food contact recycled plastics.
Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 was published on September 20, 2022. It repealed Regulation (EC) 282/2002 and entered into force on October 10, 2022 – twenty days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU).
SGS has published SafeGuardS 114.22 to provide stakeholders with an easy-to-access overview of the new regulation. It includes a table containing the highlights in each of the chapters within the new regulation:
– Chapter I ‘Subject Matter, Scope and Definitions’
– Chapter II ‘Placing on the Market of Recycled Plastic and Recycled Plastic Materials and Articles’
– Chapter III ‘General Requirements for Plastic Recycling and the Use of Recycled Plastic’
– Chapter V ‘Procedure for the Authorization of Individual Recycling Processes’
– Chapter VIII ‘Compliance Documentation’
Highlights include:
– Rules for placing food contact recycled plastics onto the market
– Requirements for waste management operators
– Details of documentation, instructions and labeling requirements
Stakeholders should review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 114.22 for complete details of the new EU regulation on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
