Japan amends Textile Product Quality Labeling Regulations to replace the designated term ‘acrylic’ with ‘modacrylic’.
The amendment refers to the generic name for polyacrylonitrile synthetic fibers that are used in textile product labeling. This change follows a revision to Japanese Industrial Standards JIS L0204-2 “Textile Term (Raw Material Division) – Part 2: Chemical Fiber” in November 2020.
Modacrylic will now be used for acrylic type fibers that have a mass ratio of acrylonitrile of less than 85%. Previously, these came under the ‘others’ designation.
Stakeholders should be aware that the following terms should be used for polyacrylonitrile synthetic fibers:
- ‘Acrylic’ (アクリル) – mass of acrylonitrile of 85% or more
- ‘Modacrylic’ (モダクリル) – others
This revision was approved and came into effect on January 1, 2022. There is a grace period until December 31, 2022, after which product labels must use the correct terminology.
Products currently in circulation do not need their labels revised.
