SGS Details Proposed Updates to Canadian Toys Regulations

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspections and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS covering Canada’s proposed amendments to its Toys Regulations (SOR/2011-17).

Canada issued a notice of intent on June 23, 2023. If accepted, this will revise seven items associated with the Toys Regulations’ chemical and toxicity requirements. These have largely stayed unchanged since they were introduced in 1970 under Part I of Schedule I to the Hazardous Products Act (HPA) and subsequently transferred under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and renamed as the Toys Regulations.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 085.23 to summarize the proposed changes for requirements relating to:

– Toxic substances
– Corrosive, irritant or sensitizing substances
– Boric acid and its salts
– Migration of certain substances
– Finger paints
– Liquids, pastes, putties, gels, powders and items of avian feather origin
– Chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 085.23 to find out more about the proposed changes to the Toys Regulations.

Comments on the proposals will be accepted until September 1, 2023.
