SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published an article looking at the issue of technical barriers to trade (TBT) and the ways exporters can ensure their products will successfully access target markets.
In 1995, the WTO received 388 TBT notifications. In 2019, this had risen to 3,337.
Governments are increasingly using TBT to control imports, requiring the use of procedures such as pre-export verification of conformity (PVoC) to ensure products comply with regulations governing safety, performance, environmental impact, etc.
SGS’s Consumer Compact article looks at the problem from the perspective of the exporter and considers the approaches available when looking to access countries that utilize TBT.
