SGS Publishes SafeGuardS Looking at Two New CEN Standards for Food Contact Plastics

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS detailing two new European standards for testing overall migration from food contact plastics.

European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published the two standards in the third quarter of 2022. They are:

– EN 1186-2:2022 supersedes EN 1186:2002 Parts 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 and will be given the status of a national standard by January 2023
– EN 1186-3:2022 supersedes EN 1186:2002 Parts 3, 5, 7, 9, 14 and 15. It will be given the status of a national standard by February 2023

For both standards, conflicting national standards must be withdrawn by these dates at the very latest.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 130.22 to help stakeholders understand the provisions in the two standards. It includes a table summarizing the scope, test method general principles and requirements.

For more information, stakeholders are advised to review SGS SafeGuardS 130.22.
