Food Contact Plastics Legislation Introduced in Georgia

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising manufacturers and suppliers of food contact materials and products made from plastic that Georgia has issued a new Technical Regulation that will come into effect on January 1, 2026.

Resolution No. 304 of June 8, 2022 (Resolution No. 304/2022) was issued in June 2022. It is essentially based on European Union (EU) Regulation 10/2011, with amendments to Regulation (EU) 2020/1245 on food contact plastics.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 126.22 to help stakeholders understand the changes. It contains details of Resolution No. 304/2022, including a table that summarizes its contents and requirements. For more information, stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 126.22.

Stakeholders are also reminded that Georgia issued Resolution No. 317/2018 in 2018. This contains requirements for materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. It follows EU Regulation 1935/2004 and establishes 17 groups of food contact materials and articles and covers a wide range of requirements, including:

  1. – Authorization of new substances
  2. – Confidentiality
  3. – Declaration of compliance (DoC)
  4. – Economic operators
  5. – General safety (Article 4)
  6. – Labeling (glass and fork symbol)
  7. – Traceability

Since 2018, it has been amended twice, by Resolution No. 120/2020 and Resolution No. 112/202, and will come into effect on September 1, 2024.

Resolution No. 304/2022 on food contact plastics will become effective on January 1, 2026.
